Project Overview:
Hinkley Point C represents one of the UK's most significant infrastructure projects—the first nuclear power station to be built in Britain in over two decades. Both directors of Cambridge Lifting Services operated tower cranes on this complex, high-stakes site, gaining invaluable experience in an environment where precision, safety protocols, and operational discipline are non-negotiable.
Operational Scope:
Working as part of the site's tower crane team, our directors were responsible for the continuous movement of materials, equipment, and components across the construction site. This included:
Lifting structural steel, reinforcement materials, formwork, and concrete components to designated work areas
Supporting multiple trades simultaneously across different zones of the site
Coordinating with ground crews, slingers, and banksmen to ensure safe load handling throughout extended shifts
Operating within stringent nuclear site safety protocols and security requirements
Managing lifts in challenging weather conditions while adhering to strict operational limitations
Maintaining detailed logs and communication with site management regarding crane availability and operational status
Key Experience Gained:
The scale and complexity of Hinkley Point C provided exposure to construction operations that few sites in the UK can match. Operating tower cranes on a nuclear project demands absolute adherence to safety procedures, meticulous load documentation, and the ability to work within heavily regulated environments where there is zero tolerance for shortcuts or deviation from established protocols.
This experience reinforced the fundamental principle that underpins Cambridge Lifting Services today: every lift matters. Whether moving materials for daily construction activities or supporting critical path operations, the same level of planning, communication, and execution is required. The habits formed operating in such a demanding environment—thoroughness, situational awareness, and unwavering commitment to safe working practices—are embedded in how CLS approaches every project.
